Board reviews first readings of multiple policy updates, including artificial intelligence and graduation requirements

The Silver Creek board on May 13 held first readings of a package of policy updates that included new language addressing artificial intelligence, updated graduation requirements, responsibilities of the superintendent, and a recommendation to delete an outdated private‑vehicle transportation policy.

Superintendent Dr. Briggs reviewed the packet, noting several specific items. "0164 notice of meetings, that's actually a delete. That's been wrapped into 0165 board meetings," Briggs said. He listed other items by number and short description: a new legal counsel policy (0172), updated responsibilities for the superintendent (1230), deletion of class size policy (2312), a new technology resources policy and updated acceptable‑use language adding artificial intelligence safeguards, and updates to graduation requirements to reflect recent state changes.

Briggs said the district recently updated graduation language late in 2024 and expects further updates once the state board finalizes new graduation requirements. He described additions to student conduct policy to address academic dishonesty and artificial intelligence and said technology device and acceptable use policies will be revised to include AI guidance. Briggs recommended deleting policy 8660 (transportation by private vehicle) to avoid staff transporting students in private cars.

The items were presented as first readings; Dr. Briggs said they will return for a second reading and vote at the May 27 board meeting. No policy votes occurred on May 13.
