McAllen ISD honors outgoing trustees Sofia Pena, Debbie Crane Aliceda and Lucia Thompson

The McAllen Independent School District board on May 13 recognized outgoing board president Sofia M. Pena and trustees Debbie Crane Aliceda and Lucia Thompson and presented plaques honoring their service.
Mark May, the district’s director of marketing and communications, read biographical statements summarizing each trustee’s contributions. The district acknowledged Pena’s leadership as board president for the 2024-25 school year and her advocacy for dual-credit and disability services; Crane Aliceda’s long tenure, volunteer work and local board and nonprofit involvement dating back to her swearing-in in May 2011 (with a break) and her advocacy for fine arts; and Thompson’s service since her appointment to Place 7 in June of the previous year and her professional background as an attorney and business owner.
Each honoree spoke briefly. Crane Aliceda reflected on initiatives she supported during her tenure, including the district’s 1-to-1 digital learning initiative (TLC Cubed) and programs such as the culinary and aviation programs and the kids marathon in partnership with the city. Thompson said serving, even for a short term, was “one of my joys” and thanked colleagues and the community.
The recognition portion of the meeting was ceremonial; no formal board actions were recorded for the presentations.
