McAllen ISD canvasses May 3 trustee election; three winners certified and sworn in

The McAllen Independent School District board of trustees on May 13 canvassed the May 3 trustee election results, adopted an order declaring the winners for places 3, 6 and 7, presented certificates of election and administered oaths to the three trustees during a special meeting at UTRGV’s McAllen ISD Collegiate Academy.
The board accepted the Hidalgo County Elections Department’s report showing 4,022 total ballots cast for Place 3, with Robert Carrion receiving 2,531 votes (about 62.99%) and Lina Cano receiving 1,491 votes (about 37.06%). Place 6 recorded 3,061 ballots, with Sofia M. Pena receiving all 3,061 votes. Place 7 recorded 3,961 ballots: Robert Haddad with 2,921 votes (73.74%), Rogelio Aleman II with 359 (9.06%) and Tiffany Ramos with 681 (17.19%).
Chief Human Resources Officer Dr. Albert Canales presented the canvass and recommended the board adopt the order declaring the results. Trustee Alisada moved to canvas the results and Trustee Dela Garza Lopez seconded; the motion carried 7-0. The board then moved to adopt the order declaring the results by the same vote.
After the board adopted the order, Dr. Canales read the certificates of election for each winner and Superintendent René Gutierrez and trustees presented the certificates. The board then conducted the oath-of-office ceremony for Place 3 Trustee Robert Joseph Carrion, Place 6 Trustee Sofia M. Pena and Place 7 Trustee Roberto Adian Haddad. Hidalgo County Magistrate Judge Larry Esparza administered the oath to Carrion; attorney Simran Singh administered the oath to Pena; and a U.S. district judge administered the oath to Haddad during the ceremony.
Trustee-elect Carrion told the board and audience he was “thrilled to serve our community” and said he looked forward to working with district leadership. Trustee Pena thanked family and community supporters and said, “I promise to be honest and fair always in all my decisions.” Trustee Haddad said it was “an honor of a lifetime” and cited education as the reason he sought the role.
The canvass and certification cited board policy references and statutory items noted during the meeting: board policy BBBB (legal) and post-election procedures under board policy BBB(b) (legal), Article XVI, Section 1 of the Texas Constitution regarding officer statements, and Texas Government Code 601.005 as referenced by staff during the oath and certification presentation.
No contested actions arose during the canvass; the board approved the canvass and the order declaring the results by unanimous votes and completed the clerical steps required to place the newly certified trustees into office.
