Volunteers raise more than half of funds for new ‘Welcome to Alton’ sign; DOT permit and placement planned

Volunteers and local businesses have raised more than half of the approximately $8,000 needed to install a new granite-and-composite “Welcome to Alton” sign at the town traffic circle, town staff told the Board of Selectmen May 13.
Town staff said fundraising has progressed quickly — more than $3,000 initially and later more than $4,000 — and that organizers hope to place and install the sign before July 4. The proposed location is the grassed area in the traffic circle across from McDonald’s, facing traffic coming from the Durham side.
Design details presented to the board show granite posts (8x8x12) on either side with a 7-by-4-foot sign panel between them, raised approximately 8 feet above grade after installation. The design work is being led by a local sign maker who previously worked on local museum and town signage projects and organizers confirmed Department of Transportation permitting is required for placement in the circle.
DPW staff will coordinate a site-staking visit with the sign organizers so prospective viewers can see the intended location and so the paperwork for DOT permits can reflect the exact stake placement. Selectmen indicated they favor the design but asked for final material specifications at the permitting/approval stage to ensure low maintenance.
