Bridge on County Road 145 rehabilitated; county shows progress photos and construction details

Public-works staff presented a multi-photo update on April 14 showing the rehabilitation of the bridge on County Road 145, describing work to encase deteriorated piling, preserve precast caps and replace wing walls plus the paving of approaches.

Staff said the superstructure and precast caps were generally in good condition while the timber piling and back walls showed deterioration in the splash zone and section loss. Contractors isolated the stream, dewatered the work area, removed selected superstructure components for careful handling, and encased existing piles with concrete to restore bearing capacity. Staff described the work as rehabilitation, which is significantly less costly than full reconstruction when major structural components such as caps and superstructure are reusable.

Photos shown to the commission depicted formwork, tie-ins for closure pours, elastomeric bearing pads, cleaned and descaled steel members, scour protection and completed approach paving. Staff said the project used state grant funding (with ALDOT oversight for bridge inspection standards) and that approach paving had been completed; final channel pours and finishing were under way when the presentation was prepared. Staff characterized the project as substantially complete and said the structure showed uniform finishes after the final cleaning and closure pours.

Ending: Staff called the project effectively complete, noting the bridge could carry traffic subject to final paving tie-ins and finishing touches; the commission acknowledged the work and staff’s presentation.
