Jackson County IT staff presented preliminary plans May 12 to upgrade security cameras at the county courthouse and the Liberty Lane facility to a single, networked system and to move toward federal NDAA/TAA compliance for devices bought with federal funds.
Ross, the county IT presenter, told commissioners the county currently operates multiple older camera recorders — some analog — and that 20 cameras at the courthouse have been upgraded while roughly 25 remain older models. For Liberty Lane, engineers have identified 28 camera locations. Ross said a proposed new server would retain 60 days of video storage and licenses would allow cloud access so authorized users could review footage remotely. The plan would tie badge access to camera logs so a badge event could be quickly cross-referenced with recorded video.
Preliminary cost estimates presented to the commission included about $20,000–$25,000 to outfit Liberty Lane (28 camera spots), $17,000–$20,000 to upgrade the courthouse server and remaining cameras, and related licensing and cloud services. An AI-enabled camera was proposed for the Liberty Lane door to speed searches by attributes such as clothing color. The presenter also told commissioners that NDAA/TAA compliance means choosing nonprohibited manufacturers for devices purchased with federal funds; the county is not yet fully compliant and some existing recorders are older than 10 years.
Commissioners asked about parking-lot coverage and timeline; the presenter said wiring for Liberty Lane is being pulled during current construction so mounting points will be available and that staff will return at a future meeting with firm, engineered quotes. No final approval or budget action was taken at the May 12 meeting; commissioners directed staff to develop a formal quote and implementation plan to bring back for consideration.
