The Loveland City Council approved an at-will agreement to appoint David M. Gast as magistrate for the city’s mayor’s court, effective June 1, replacing retiring magistrate Carla Birch.
City officials told council Gast is the head of the Clermont County criminal division in the municipal court and already serves as magistrate for four other mayor’s courts in the area. City Manager Dave Kennedy said Gast is familiar with recent legislative changes to mayor’s courts, especially citation and warrant procedures that took effect Jan. 1, and that his experience will help the city handle traffic and municipal criminal cases locally.
Council discussed the role of mayor’s courts in Ohio; staff noted that because Loveland spans Hamilton, Clermont and Warren counties, a local mayor’s court avoids routing every minor violation to a county court in another jurisdiction. The agreement is at-will, and the mayor makes the appointment subject to council’s approval.
Council adopted the resolution by roll call.
