Whitfield County to apply for state opioid-settlement grant to support addiction recovery center

Whitfield County commissioners voted May 12 to apply for additional opioid settlement grant funding administered through the state to support the county’s addiction recovery center and accountability courts.
A county official told commissioners the county has already received funds from national opioid settlement agreements and that the state also won a separate suit and is distributing money to counties. “We were part of that class action,” a commissioner said, and the board authorized staff to apply for state-distributed grant funds to expand the addiction-recovery center. The county official said the application would not require a local match if the county is awarded the grant.
The motion to apply was made by Commissioner Thomas, seconded by Commissioner Jones, and approved on a 4-0 vote. Commissioners said winning additional state-distributed funds would help the county’s accountability courts and treatment services.
The meeting did not include a specific dollar amount requested; commissioners said the grant application would be prepared and filed by county staff.
