Whitfield County, city and JDA to break ground on 40-unit workforce housing at 902 S. Hamilton

Whitfield County commissioners and city partners will hold a groundbreaking at 11 a.m. May 15 for a 40-unit workforce housing development at 902 South Hamilton Street, the site of a former Mohawk facility.

County Administrator said the project is a joint effort between the city, the county and the Joint Development Authority to convert a vacant lot into urban infill workforce housing. “We have a housing shortage everywhere in the country, particularly here in Whitfield County,” the County Administrator said, adding the project is intended to provide “decent, affordable, low cost housing.”

The project will occupy a vacant lot several blocks south of the courthouse, commissioner remarks said. Commissioners described the work as an example of multiple local governments and economic development officials combining resources to realize economies of scale for housing production.

No vote was required at the meeting to authorize the groundbreaking; the announcement was delivered as part of the county administrator’s monthly report. The administrator invited commissioners and the public to attend the May 15 ceremony and said the effort is part of local strategies to ease housing shortages.
