The Brockton City Council confirmed the promotion of Officer Michael Azak to the rank of sergeant in the Brockton Police Department during its May 12, 2025 meeting and swore him into office.
The promotion was introduced by Lieutenant Schleman of the Brockton Police Department, who described Azak as a Brockton resident and summarized his education and service record. “Michael Azak is a Brockton resident. He is a graduate of the Cardinal Spellman High School here in Brockton, and, he holds a bachelor in finance from Merrimack College and a master's degree in criminal justice from the University of Massachusetts Lowell,” Schleman said. Schleman noted Azak has served with the department since August 2016 and has worked in uniform patrol on the midnight shift.
At the meeting Councilor Lally moved to take the item up under suspension of the rules so it could be acted on that night; the motion was seconded and passed. The council then voted by roll call to confirm the appointment; the council recorded eight votes in the affirmative and the appointment was approved. After confirmation, a motion for reconsideration was made and defeated. The council proceeded to swear in Azak at the meeting.
After the oath, Michael Azak addressed the council and attendees, thanking family and colleagues. “Thank you so much. I just wanna say thank you for the opportunity. I'm excited to be here. This is something I've wanted since I started in this career,” Azak said.
The council record shows the mayor and police chief had recommended Azak's promotion and that his name appeared as the top-ranked candidate on the promotional list provided by the department. The council’s formal roll-call confirmation and the public swearing completed the promotion process at the May 12 meeting.
