Franklin SSD approves first reading to add Introduction to Aerospace to advanced-course policy

The Franklin Special School District Board of Education approved a first reading to revise Policy 4.2205 to add Introduction to Aerospace to the district's advanced-course listings and to clarify the district's wait-list procedures.

The change adds Introduction to Aerospace on the high-school course list and clarifies that the wait list language does not apply to seventh-grade Algebra 1. "We recommend approval of the first reading," Doctor Snowden, director of schools, told the board before members voted to approve the item as a first reading.

District staff said students who complete Introduction to Aerospace will be eligible to take Aviation 1 next school year. Students now in eighth grade who complete the introductory course will return in the morning to Freedom Middle School to take Aviation 1 with Mr. Dollar and then be transported by bus to either Franklin or Centennial High School for part of the program. Staff and a news segment shown at the meeting said the curriculum uses flight simulators; students will earn high-school credit and log hours that may be applied toward a pilot's license.

"We don't want them to be afraid of flying. We want them to understand, the safety aspect of it," Mr. Dollar said during the presentation about the course's emphasis on safety and procedure. A short video from a local news report was shown during the update.

The change to Policy 4.2205 was presented as a first reading; the board did not record a named mover or vote tally on the public transcript beyond the board's approval of the first reading. The written policy revision notes the new course on page 5 and the clarified wait-list language on page 3, item 13.

District staff said further implementation details — including enrollment caps, transportation logistics, and scheduling — will be finalized before full adoption and rollout of Aviation 1 next school year.
