Board awards design contract for downtown ornamental lighting; construction grant covers work

The Port Washington Board of Public Works approved hiring PowerTech Engineering to design replacement ornamental street lighting for the city-owned downtown system and to convert fixtures to LED.
Staff said the existing decorative lights are about 50 years old, have a mix of voltages, cracked bases and wiring that does not meet current standards. The city received a $382,000 grant to perform construction work and staff said the design will be funded primarily from TID 2. The design scope will evaluate fixture locations, wiring, bases and potential conversion of the marina parking-lot lights; staff noted construction of the marina lighting may be deferred depending on final costs.
Board members authorized the design contract after a brief discussion about color temperature and LED choices; staff said the design will look at optimal pole locations and wiring while attempting to reuse existing connections where feasible. The board did not change the grant or TID funding approach at the meeting.
