Board approves design contract for left-turn lane at new public safety building entrance

The Port Washington Board of Public Works approved a not-to-exceed time-and-materials proposal from Bloom Engineers to design a left-turn lane on eastbound State Trunk Highway 33 at the new public safety building entrance.
City staff said the Department of Transportation asked the city to provide a dedicated left-turn lane as part of granting access rights to the new site. The design proposal priced by Bloom Engineers covers traffic analysis, taper and storage design and the paperwork required for DOT review; staff described the cost as consistent with DOT project paperwork even for a relatively short lane.
Alderman Miller moved to approve the staff recommendation; committee member Pauley seconded. Board members added a condition that the contract be subject to review and approval by the city attorney; the motion passed on a voice vote.
Staff said the lane will follow DOT minimum standards for storage and deceleration (discussion indicated roughly 50 feet storage and 75 feet deceleration were considered), and that the design cost estimate reflects professional hours to prepare environmental documentation, plan revisions and DOT submittals. Final construction costs will be separate and subject to DOT and future budget approvals.
