Council agrees to delay some permit hearings until after related court dates; animal IUP processed separately

East Bethel city officials agreed on May 12 to postpone certain permit actions tied to ongoing criminal proceedings and to proceed separately on a related animal interim-use permit (IUP).
During public forum, speaker Tammy Gimpel said her criminal court date is in June and asked that the council delay permit action until she can address the matter in court. Council members discussed two separate IUPs: an animal-containment/home-occupation IUP and a horse IUP. City staff said the mayor and council could set the schedule; council reached consensus to address the horse IUP at the May 28 meeting and to revisit the home-occupation IUP after the first court date. If the court date is postponed, the council agreed to revisit the matter at the first meeting in July.
City staff clarified that the animal IUP is not dependent on the criminal proceeding and could be handled separately; one councilmember suggested taking the animal IUP up promptly to clear that issue from the calendar.
Tammy Gimpel asked that both items be delayed until after her court appearance so she could "completely defend" herself. The mayor noted delays in criminal calendars and that a court date is not guaranteed to conclude a matter in June. Council direction to staff was informal consensus rather than a formal motion in this discussion; staff indicated that if there is general consensus, no formal motion is necessary and that separate scheduling would be used to process the animal IUP and the horse IUP accordingly.
