Kerr County votes to join Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce, leaves membership level for later decision

Kerr County Commissioners on Tuesday voted to approve joining the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce, with the court deciding membership is appropriate though leaving the formal membership level for a later discussion.

Mindy Windle, president and CEO of the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce, made a presentation to the court describing the chamber's programs, membership levels and benefits, and said membership would extend chamber services across the Kerrville area.

Commissioners debated whether county taxpayer funds should be used to join a business association. Several commissioners who are individual chamber members said they supported the idea for community and event promotion; others said they were uncomfortable committing tax dollars to a private business association and wanted the county to avoid even modest recurring membership dues.

Commissioner Jones moved that the county join the chamber; the motion received a second and passed on a 3-2 vote. The court did not commit to a membership level at the time of the vote; one commissioner urged adopting the Diamond level ($1,800 annually) if the court intended to be fully engaged, while others said the level could be decided in a later session and noted potential coverage by future hotel-occupancy tax revenue if that measure passes.

Judge Kelly and county staff said a future budget adjustment could identify whether membership dues should be paid from county general funds or covered by tourism-related revenue if applicable.

What happens next: The county will be listed as a chamber member; commissioners directed staff to return with options for membership level and funding source before the court finalizes annual dues.
