Red Oak ISD canvasses May 3 bond results, swears in trustee and elects officers

The Red Oak Independent School District Board of Trustees on May 12 canvassed returns from the May 3 special bond election, certified the results supplied by the Ellis County Elections Administrator and issued a certificate of election for Donna Knight, who was certified as unopposed.

The board recorded the precinct returns for the three propositions as follows: Proposition A — 1,503 for, 980 against (2,483 total); Proposition B — 1,372 for, 1,100 against (2,472 total); Proposition C — 1,372 for, 1,102 against (2,474 total). The board approved the canvass by motion and a recorded 6-0 vote.

In a separate set of organizational votes, the trustees elected officers for the coming year. Melanie Peterson was re-elected board president, Johnny Knight was elected vice president and Michelle Porter was elected secretary; each motion passed 6-0.

Melanie Peterson, serving as presiding officer at the canvass, read the official certification and noted the board convened at 6 p.m. and that the figures on the summary sheet corresponded with the county returns. After the canvas vote, the board issued the certificate of election for Donna Knight and completed her swearing-in at the meeting; the transcript records that Brian Sebring was sworn in earlier because he was unable to attend the May 12 meeting.

The canvass and officer elections were processed as formal board business during the May 12 meeting and carried by unanimous recorded votes. The board did not take additional actions tied to the bond propositions at this meeting beyond certifying the returns and beginning post-election steps for winners and trustee organization.
