The Sydney City Council on May 13 approved Resolution 20250501 to purchase a replacement 12-plus-2 passenger transit bus costing $125,000, with the city’s local share set at $12,500 (10%) under the Federal Transit Administration purchase agreement.
A staff member from the city’s transportation program outlined recent ridership growth and the reasons for replacement: one bus had a blown engine and was deemed eligible for disposal. Staff reported more than 30,000 rides so far in the fiscal year and that demand has grown from roughly 16,000 rides two years earlier to an anticipated ~35,000 this year.
The staff member said the cost to repair the old bus was nearly $12,000 and that procurement and supply-chain timelines mean the replacement vehicle would arrive in roughly 180 days. The recommended vehicle type is a 12-plus-2 passenger bus to match the city’s current fleet.
Council voted to approve the resolution by roll call, 5-0. Council discussion briefly touched on service capacity during school peak times and plans to deploy the fleet to reduce public wait times.
The purchase will be reimbursed using 80% federal, 10% state and 10% local funds; the city’s $12,500 local match was recorded in the resolution vote.
