Citing recurring congestion and safety concerns near the intersection of Main Street and Santa Clara, the City Council on May 13 authorized staff to conduct a warrant analysis to determine whether an all‑way stop is justified.
Councilman Hicks said traffic backs up near Steele High School and that left‑turn movement from Santa Clara is often blocked. Public Works staff noted a standard warrant analysis requires traffic counts, peak‑hour measurements and review of crash history; similar counts in other neighborhoods had not met stop‑warrant thresholds. Despite that, staff recommended performing data collection and analysis so the council could decide based on objective criteria.
Councilman Hicks moved and the council approved the traffic study request; staff said the study will cost approximately $5,000 and staff will report results to council. City Manager Brian Reid noted the city could draw the expense from an available ARPA set‑aside used for prior traffic studies. The study will also include review of pedestrian activity and crash history at the intersection.
