Pottawattamie County proclaims May 2025 Mental Health Awareness Month

The Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors approved a proclamation May 13 designating May 2025 as Mental Health Awareness Month and noted countywide efforts to reduce stigma and increase access to services.
Suzanne Watson, director and CEO of Community Services, asked the board to adopt the proclamation and outlined county efforts: Community Services' history of case management since 1992, planned transition to a disability access point in July, coordination with veterans services and public-health wellness efforts, and a county wellness committee that promotes mental-health activities in May. "I think we just take this month to make sure that people know that it is okay to talk about mental health," Watson said.
The proclamation cites national and state statistics the board read into the record (for example, that one in five Iowans experience a mental-health condition) and states that the county courthouse will be lit green from May 18 to May 31 in alignment with the national color for mental-health awareness. The board approved the proclamation by roll call vote.
