Council agrees to contract fireworks show for 2025; seeks nonprofit to assume event long-term

The Auburn City Council voted to authorize staff to contract for a community fireworks display at the Placer County Fairgrounds for July 4, 2025, after the Chamber of Commerce declined to continue running the event.
City staff told council the Chamber had stepped away from producing the long-running fireworks show and that private organizers and downtown business representatives had tried to assemble a replacement. Staff said insurance for the contracted fireworks vendor and timing for contract execution had been the key obstacles to a sustained civilian-led production; the event's vendor contract required signing by May 1 to meet production timelines.
City Manager and staff said the all-in cost for the event would be roughly $21,000, including fireworks, permitting and fairgrounds rental. The fairgrounds CEO offered a 20% rental discount. The city had previously indicated willingness to contribute $9,000 toward the show; staff said private fundraising and sponsorships were expected to cover the balance.
Several council members said they preferred the city not to operate the event on a continuing basis and urged a nonprofit (for example, an Auburn Fireworks Committee or an existing nonprofit) to step in for future years. Council members also noted the public-safety argument for holding a single professional fireworks show in a controlled venue rather than leaving people to use consumer fireworks.
After discussion and public comment, the council voted to direct staff to proceed with contracting for the 2025 fireworks show, subject to procurement and insurance terms. The motion passed by roll call: Council Members Bridal Harris, Davis, Dowden Calvillo and Holmes voted in favor; Mayor Sandra Amara voted no. Staff said the city will pursue local sponsors and transition the event to a nonprofit organizer for future years if a suitable organization forms.
