Board approves $175,000 expansion to Emeritus staffing contract to cover paraprofessional needs through end of school year

The Central Unified Board approved on May 13 a $175,000 expansion of the district’s Emeritus Maxum staffing contract to cover paraprofessional needs and absences through the end of the school year.
Assistant Superintendent Marlene Lopez said Emeritus provides temporary paraprofessionals and aides to cover absences and to support students on individualized education plans (IEPs). Staff reported $600,000 had been expended on similar contracts earlier in the year; the additional $175,000 would bring the year‑to‑date total to about $775,000.
Trustee Sellers asked about total expenditures to date; staff confirmed the amounts. Trustee Kirk moved to approve the expansion and Trustee Curfon seconded; the motion carried 7‑0.
Administration said staffing shortages and coverage needs will be evaluated going into next year and that the district is reviewing long‑term substitute and paraprofessional strategies as part of broader staffing planning.
