Council backs historical markers for Eddie Matthews and Trammell’s Trace

The Texarkana City Council unanimously approved two heritage items Monday: a resolution authorizing an application to the Texas Historical Commission for a marker honoring Eddie Matthews at the Swanger Complex, and a resolution authorizing identification and marking of Trammell’s Trace through the city.
Vashile Fernandez, staff, told the council that Eddie Matthews, a Texarkana native and former major-league third baseman, would be commemorated with a historical marker at Swanger Complex. Fernandez said placing the marker would recognize Matthews’ local connection and baseball career.
Fernandez also described Trammell’s Trace as "the first road into Texas," explaining that the route extends from the Texarkana area toward Nacogdoches. The council approved authorizing staff to identify and mark the route through the city; Fernandez said the historic commission had approved the concept.
Both resolutions passed unanimously without public opposition during the meeting.
