Summit Utilities asks to continue public hearing on proposed natural gas rate increase

Representatives of Summit Utilities asked the Texarkana City Council on Monday to continue the public hearing on the utility’s proposed natural-gas rate increase to the council’s June meeting to allow staff time to gather additional information.
Brooke Parsons, director of regulatory for the region, and Greg Shirkland, the company’s operations director, said they had been in contact with City Manager Dr. Orr and City Attorney Jeff Lewis and that Summit planned to provide supplemental information ahead of the June meeting. Parsons said Summit had asked the council to continue the hearing so the company can provide supporting materials at the next meeting.
Councilmember Jean Matlock had requested additional information; Parsons and Shirkland confirmed they would work with staff outside the public meeting and then present to the full council in June. City Attorney Jeff Lewis reminded the council that anyone else wishing to speak on the item should be given the opportunity prior to final action. The council agreed to continue the public hearing to the June 9 meeting and took no vote on rates at Monday’s meeting.
