New board members sworn in; district honors student national art winners and top student council

St. Charles Community Unit School District 303 took its oath of office and celebrated student achievements at the May 12 board meeting.
Judge Hull administered the oath to incoming board members "Miss Hancock" and "Doctor Rich," who joined returning and continuing members on the dais. The board president opened the meeting by thanking outgoing members "Mister McNally" and "Mister Lentz" for their service; board comments and the superintendent's remarks emphasized long service and institutional knowledge, noting McNally's 12 years on the board and Lentz's role as committee chair for business services.
"Thank you for being a member of the board who helped bring me here," Superintendent Dr. Gordon told Mr. McNally, adding gratitude for his work on curriculum adoptions, boundary changes, labor contracts and committee leadership. Other board members echoed that thanks, citing McNally's long tenure and Lentz's detailed work on facilities and business services.
The superintendent's report included two recognitions of student achievement. Stephanie Dodd, department chair at St. Charles North High School, introduced three national Scholastic Art & Writing Award winners: Simone (gold medal, digital illustration), Gianna (silver medal, colored‑pencil drawing) and Claire (silver medal, photography). Dodd said national medalists represent less than 1% of the more than 300,000 works submitted worldwide; Simone is scheduled to attend the national award ceremony in New York City and be recognized at Carnegie Hall.
The board also welcomed members of the North Star Council (Saint Charles North's student council), who brought the school's National Gold Council of Excellence recognition from the National Association of Student Councils; advisors noted North was one of six Illinois schools to receive the award this year.
After swearing in and ceremonial remarks, the board completed organizational business later in the meeting: members elected Heidi Fairgrief as board president, Joe Lackner as vice president and Becky McCabe as board secretary for the 2025–26 year.
The meeting combined formal organizational actions with community recognition; no policy changes were enacted as part of the oath or the award presentations.
