Board backs "Pathways to Success" revamp of alternative programming; district to solicit returning virtual students

The Manitowoc board approved a district plan to replace the current McKinley Academy model with a flexible program, described by administrators as "Pathways to Success," aimed at meeting students where they are academically and socially.
The program redesign includes flexible scheduling for students in grades 8–12, virtual credit recovery options, alternative education programming, off‑site supports and discussion of a recovery high school for students with addiction or health issues. "You can tailor your education time to when it works best for you," a curriculum committee member said while describing the proposal.
Administrators told the board about outreach plans to bring students back into district programs. Staff reported they have approximately 70–80 students currently open‑enrolled in other virtual schools and planned to send a letter to those families explaining the new program and inviting students to return. A flyer explaining program supports will accompany the letter.
Board members and administrators said the program aims to keep students connected to the district and provide in‑person supports to virtual learners. The board approved the curriculum committee's recommendation by voice vote following a motion and second.
