County approves Cisco purchases for Justice Center: $325,000 for equipment, $429,000 for core switch replacements

Columbia County approved two separate Cisco equipment procurements tied to the Justice Center construction project during the May 13 committee meeting.

Staff member Mr. Blanchard presented the purchases. One purchase is Cisco networking equipment — network switches, licensing and related hardware — quoted at $324,882.82 and described as necessary for the new Justice Center wings; the expense will be charged to Justice Center Construction project funds (PLOS funds), he said. A separate life-cycle purchase to replace two core network switches in the county data center was presented with a quoted cost of $429,000; Mr. Blanchard said the equipment is essential because the current switches are approaching end-of-life.

Commissioners asked for timing on the Justice Center build-out. Mr. Blanchard said the East Wing is expected to receive a certificate of occupancy in October, with the West Wing about one month later. A commissioner asked what the Cisco equipment covers; Mr. Blanchard replied it includes network switches, licensing, storage racks and access points — a "one-stop shopping" setup for the network. The motions to approve the equipment purchases were moved, seconded and carried on consent.

Why it matters: The purchases equip a major county capital project (the Justice Center) and replace critical data-center infrastructure approaching end-of-life. The combined procurement totals more than $700,000 and will be funded from construction and capital accounts noted in the meeting.
