City celebrates largest-ever Lubbock 101 class; 26 graduates learn city operations

LUBBOCK, Texas — The Lubbock City Council on May 13 recognized the Lubbock 101 class of 2025 and held a short graduation ceremony after a three-minute video and slideshow highlighting the program.
City staff said this year’s cycle was the largest Lubbock 101 class to date: 70 people applied and 26 were selected and completed the program. The eight-session program includes five classroom meetings and three field days designed to give residents a close look at city operations, funding and services.

Field days included demonstrations and hands-on activities at fleet services, the South Water Treatment Plant and Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport; participants operated equipment, observed fire and police demonstrations and toured public works operations.
City staff recognized perfect-attendance participants and presented certificates. City Manager (presenting the program overview) noted the program’s goals “to give our citizens a crash course in the operations, the program of service, and the funding of the City Of Lubbock.” A skills contest run by pipeline staff produced first-place winner Elizabeth Moore and second-place winner Matt Weaver; Jim Wells was selected by random draw to receive a street sign for perfect attendance.
Ending: Organizers encouraged other residents to apply for future Lubbock 101 classes; the program is offered annually and teaches civic processes, departmental functions and volunteer/board opportunities.
