Board approves $40 hourly stipend and back pay for district AV technician

The Coffee County Board of Education voted to pay a stipend to the district employee who provides audio/video support for board and public meetings, approving $40 per hour for his time and authorizing retroactive pay to cover hours worked since July 1.
Board members said the staffer, identified in discussion as Randy Damewood, works outside his normal school-day duties to set up and manage livestreaming and AV for meetings. A recommendation circulated by trustees noted previous informal discussions had suggested $30 per hour but that director Powell and board member Miss Hodge recommended $40 per hour to reflect long meeting hours and duties. Powell said the hourly stipend would apply only to time beyond the employee’s normal workday.
The board first approved the $40-per-hour stipend, then moved to reconsider earlier procedural language and voted to include back pay for hours worked this school year going back to July 1. Trustees also approved a budget amendment (funding line described in the meeting as a precautionary overestimate) to cover the back pay and ongoing stipend line; the amendment amount discussed was approximately $7,500 to ensure coverage of hours already worked and anticipated needs.
Board members voted unanimously on the stipend, the reconsideration and the budget amendment.
