Sugar Land council certifies May 3 election returns, sets June 7 mayoral runoff; two members sworn in

At a special meeting Tuesday in Sugar Land, the City Council approved Ordinance No. 23‑75 canvassing the returns of the May 3, 2025 general and special elections and declared winners for multiple races; the council also set a runoff election for June 7, 2025, for mayor and one at‑large seat and administered oaths to two newly declared council members.

The canvass, read into the record as part of Ordinance No. 23‑75, listed vote totals for mayoral and council candidates. The mayoral tallies recorded were: Michelle McCheska 1,933; Sarwar Khan 250; Nashed Kirmali 3,363; William Ferguson 5,834; Alex Soule 226; and Carol McCutcheon 4,642. The council declared William Ferguson and Carol McCutcheon to be the top two for mayor and scheduled a runoff for June 7, 2025.

For other contests, the record listed candidate totals for at‑large and district races and the council declared the following to have been elected: Robert Boettcher (At‑Large Position 2) and Rick Miller (District 4). The council accepted the canvass by motion and a hand vote that passed 7‑0.

The council then administered oaths of office to Robert Boettcher for At‑Large Position 2 and to Rick Miller for District 4. Judge Beau Miller of the 190th Judicial District Court administered the oath to Rick Miller.

The ordinance also recorded the results of a city charter amendment question as read at the meeting: Yes 6,272; No 8,302, as included in the canvass language that the council accepted.

No additional actions related to the election canvass were taken at the meeting. The council adjourned after completing the agenda.
