Commission reviews tree‑festival logistics after wet conditions forced pruning demo change

Members of the Stow City Urban Forestry Commission reviewed a recent public tree event and identified several operational changes for next year after rain and site layout limited planned pruning demonstrations.

Commissioners reported that the planting and mulching stations worked well but that the pruning demonstration underperformed because the tree selected for pruning was an oak (not suitable for pruning at that season) and a nearby maple planting area had been inundated by rain. The wet ground and booth placement meant staff could not safely perform the planned cutting demonstrations, and staff said that limited hands‑on pruning reduced public interest in that station.

Commissioners suggested preparing alternate demonstration specimens so a backup tree would be available if the planned specimen could not be trimmed. They also proposed earlier acclimation of handed‑out saplings and asked whether a local nursery could grow larger stock so the commission could distribute more user‑ready plants next year.

On tools, staff reported they had asked Lepo (a tool supplier) to donate pruners, telescoping loppers, telescoping pruners and a few handsaws for use as display tools at future outreach events. Commissioners emphasized the tools would be for demonstration and giveaways, not for crews’ operational equipment.

Logistics feedback included ordering a more stable banner or a canopy that is easier to erect outdoors, and arranging booth layout so demonstrations are not placed where foot traffic or standing water will block visibility. Staff said they will source alternative banners and canopy options for future pop‑ups and will follow up with the vendor and with Lepo about tool donations.
