On May 13 the Johnson City Regional Planning Commission recommended approval of a Washington County text amendment to permit churches and cemeteries in the B‑1 Neighborhood Business District.
Planner Bryce McNamer told the commission the change would add churches and cemeteries to the list of permitted uses in B‑1. He said B‑1 is the least intensive commercial district and that non‑retail uses such as funeral homes and day‑care centers are already permitted; the amendment would expand where churches and cemeteries are allowed beyond their current locations in residential and agricultural districts.
No members of the public spoke for or against the amendment during the planning commission hearing. Commissioners discussed the measure briefly and voted unanimously to recommend approval; McNamer noted the amendment already received a positive recommendation from the Washington County Planning Commission on May 6 and will proceed to the Washington County Commission for final action.
The recommendation will be transmitted to Washington County, which has final zoning authority.
