Planning commission moves comp plan and critical areas update toward adoption later this year

The Anacortes planning committee reported that the comprehensive plan update is on track for public release in late June or early July and that staff and the planning commission expect to pursue adoption of the plan by the end of 2025.
Committee members said a consultant is reviewing best available science to determine whether the city's critical areas regulations require changes since the last update in 2021. Planning staff said the planning commission has the last three goals and policies to review and will hold meetings on the climate, parks and economic development elements before completing the draft.
Staff reported healthy public participation, with roughly 50 public comments received so far and additional opportunities to comment once the draft is released. The committee said a tracker sheet will show each goal and policy, related public comments and staff responses to support council review when the draft is presented.
"We are on track to have our comp plan adopted by the end of this year," a committee member said, noting the planning commission's work and upcoming public-review steps. The committee emphasized continued outreach and detailed tracking of comments in the coming weeks.
No formal council action was required at the May 12 meeting; the report was informational and sets expectations for the coming public-review period and council check-in when the draft is posted.
