Speedway to announce donor pledge for roundabout safety project; $2 million estimate

Town Manager Grant Kleinheinz told the Town Council on May 12 that the redevelopment commission will hold a press conference next Monday to announce a substantial pledge for a roundabout improvement project near Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Kleinheinz said the project is out for bid and estimated at about $2,000,000. He said the donor is a "local, racing legend" and that the pledge will be announced at a May press conference at 1 p.m. at the Seeds of Light sculpture. Kleinheinz described the project’s principal safety aim: "The main focus of this is to create a sight line that will stop people from driving through the center of the roundabout, which happens almost monthly. ... People will have to slow down. There will be some signage and other things that will create a different look and feel, but not block Gate 1 and the main entrance there, to IMS."
Work is expected to start in June with an anticipated completion around April 2026 to coincide with the town’s centennial celebration, Kleinheinz said. The redevelopment commission has been working on the project for about 2½ years, and officials encouraged other donors to consider contributing.
