Board approves Eureka Math Squared K–8 pilot for 16 schools, funded from state textbook monies

The Moore County Schools Board of Education voted May 12 to purchase the Eureka Math Squared K–8 curriculum for a three-year pilot covering 16 of the district's 18 K–8 schools, funded from the district's state textbook fund.
Doctor Locklear and Miss Gephardt presented the recommendation. Miss Gephardt said the district piloted the program in limited K–5 and middle-school classrooms, with the first full year of implementation in 2024–25. She reported that middle school composite math scores rose in the schools that piloted the material and that teachers responding in pilot sites gave positive feedback.
The purchase will be funded from the state textbook fund, which the superintendent said accrues about $500,000 annually from the state for curriculum and resource purchases. Board members asked about pilot representation across grade levels and requested follow-up details on classroom counts; Miss Gephardt said the pilot included Connect Academy, three middle schools and 13 elementary sites representing varying grade configurations.
A motion to approve the purchase for a three-year period was made by Miss Davis and seconded by Doctor Dahl; the motion carried by voice vote.
Board members praised the pilot approach and teacher engagement in evaluating materials and asked staff to provide more precise classroom and cost breakdowns to the board later.
