Toms River historic commission previews 250th‑anniversary events

Mark Muddam, the township historian, and Joseph Latchaw, chairman of the Historic Preservation Commission, briefed the Toms River Township Council on the commission’s plans to mark the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution and to highlight Toms River’s historic role.
Muddam told the council the events would emphasize local Revolutionary War history, including the story of Joshua Huddy and the Battle of Toms River. “We’re here on hallowed ground,” he said, describing Town Hall’s proximity to the historic site. Latchaw outlined projects the commission expects to complete by the February 2026 observance, including a Loyalist Trail tracing where Loyalist forces landed and interpretive roll‑up banners for downtown events.
The commission also plans outreach and partnerships with the recreation department, the developmental disabilities committee, senior and youth services, and the Americans with Disabilities Act committee to broaden public access. Latchaw said the commission may pursue restoration of an older Huddy Trail, installation of a small blockhouse photo feature for children, and a series of public PowerPoint presentations to educate residents.
Council members thanked the presenters and indicated support for the commission’s outreach. No formal council action or funding decision was taken at the meeting; the presentation was informational.
The commission urged residents and volunteer groups to participate in planning and noted additional ideas are welcome as the events develop.
