HDC grants historic determination for Silver Street house; conditions include window survey, form B and narrower bump-out
Summary
The Historic District Commission granted a historic-determination contingent on an application and ratification, and approved a revised addition with conditions: reduce the bump-out width by 6 inches, change the bump-out roof to a hip, add a window survey and Form B (MACRIS) to the file, and the applicant volunteered Boston Sash windows.

The Nantucket Historic District Commission voted 4–1 on May 13 to grant a historic determination for a Silver Street property and to approve a revised addition conditioned on further documentation and modest design changes.
Why it matters: The property is recorded in inventory work now indexed in MACRIS; commissioners and the Historic Structures Advisory Board weighed in on how to keep additions subordinate to the historic main block. The accepted motion requires the applicant to provide additional historic documentation and to make a narrow change to the new bump-out so the addition reads more subordinate to the original house.
Key conditions and findings - The HDC granted the historic determination on the condition that the applicant submit a separate historic-determination application and that commission ratification follow that submission. - The HDC required a window survey and the updated MACRIS (form B) documentation be added to the HDC file. - The board approved a design amendment that the proposed bump-out be reduced by 6 inches in width and that the bump-out roof be revised to a hip roof; the applicant volunteered Boston Sash windows for the project. - The HDC requested the applicant file the window survey and the form B; the commission also asked staff to include the historic-determination application and to schedule a ratification vote afterward.
Votes and procedural notes - The motion carried 4–1 (Commissioner Angus opposed). Commissioners noted they preferred the revisions because they made the addition more subservient to the historic block and avoided an overly visible forward mass.
Next steps The applicant must file Form B (updated MACRIS survey) and a window survey for the historic building, submit the separate historic-determination application for ratification, and include the Exhibit A changes (6-inch width reduction and hip roof) in the next permit paperwork. HDC staff will prepare the conditions for the COA file.
