First, a proposed revision to the district’s grading policy (draft referencing State Board of Education “GRAD‑009” in committee discussion) would change how certain nonstandard letter grades—such as FF (failure due to absence) or pass/fail notations used for credit recovery—are assigned. Staff told the committee the State Board’s most recent revisions, adopted in fall 2024, remove local authority to award an ‘‘FF’’ when a student is academically passing but has exceeded allowed absences; instead the academic grade should reflect course performance.
Second, committee members reviewed a related policy amendment that changes credit‑recovery grading. The revised language requires that, beginning in the 2025–26 school year, credit‑recovery work earns a numeric grade proportionate to the percentage of the course completed and that such grades be factored into the student’s transcript and grade point average as specified in the draft. Staff said summer-school credit recovery during the immediately upcoming summer will continue under the district’s existing pass/fail process and that the new numeric-credit policy applies beginning with the 2025–26 school year.
Committee members asked staff whether the district currently uses the stated letter codes and sought clarification on implementation timing; staff confirmed the State Board timeline and said the draft language was adjusted to match the statewide effective date.
By forwarding the amended drafts to the full board, the committee signaled district alignment with the State Board of Education’s recent changes; staff will return with any final legal or technical edits before full-board consideration.
