Hoover said the move to Penn Waste would reduce costs versus the current contract with Republic Services; fiscal-year spending to date on trash collection was roughly $55,082 and the new contract would save approximately $3,000 in the first year, with fixed rates and a 5 percent annual increase in Penn Waste’s bid versus a 6 percent increase in the incumbent’s offer.
Hoover also said bids were solicited for exterior door repair work at the middle school. The district received one responsive bid from Mercurean Construction, at $71,052, and staff recommended accepting that bid with $59,550 to be covered by a PCD grant and approximately $12,000 to be paid from the district’s operating budget. The work would replace or repair four main door sets at the middle school to address failing hardware and improve security; staff noted prevailing-wage rules apply when projects exceed certain thresholds.
For both items the board asked questions about bid solicitation, renewal clauses and contract terms and had no objections to placing the Penn Waste contract and Mercurean Construction proposal on the next meeting agenda for formal approval.
