Egg Harbor Township Committee approves promotion of Brian Keane to police captain

Egg Harbor Township Committee on Jan. 21 approved Resolution 85 to promote Lieutenant Brian Keane to the rank of police captain and to execute an employment agreement.

The promotion was moved and seconded on the resolution and passed by roll call. After the formal action, Keane was sworn in and Committee members and department leaders offered congratulations and remarks about his qualifications.

The committee’s action followed a selection process the governing body described during the meeting. The mayor and other committee members said they considered four candidates for the post and that Keane was selected. Police leadership highlighted Keane’s years of service, specialized assignments and instructional roles during a biography read into the record.

Police Chief (name not specified) described Keane’s qualities as more than credentials on paper, saying Keane has a “passion to be better” and “passion to make people…better,” remarks the chief used to explain why Keane was chosen. Keane recited the oath of office before assuming the rank.

The committee did not discuss changes to department staffing levels or departmental budget impacts as part of the vote recorded in the meeting minutes.

The swearing-in and the accompanying short biography noted Keane’s degrees and training listed in the meeting record: a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Stockton University, a master’s degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University, graduation from the Camden County Police Academy, and prior promotions to sergeant and lieutenant, along with instructor certifications and awards listed during the remarks.

The committee’s roll-call vote on Resolution 85 was recorded during the meeting as unanimous among members present.

Captain Brian Keane will assume the duties of the captain position as described in the executed employment agreement; the resolution and signed agreement are part of the municipal record.
