The Orange County Public Schools Board voted unanimously Thursday to name the district’s new elementary school “Luminary Elementary,” following a community naming process and a board recommendation.
Superintendent Dr. Maria Vasquez introduced the naming process and asked Dr. Raheem Jones, executive leader over elementary schools, to present recommendations gathered from community stakeholders. Dr. Jones said three names emerged from stakeholder input and follow-up surveys: Luminary Academy, Luminary Elementary and Summerdale Elementary.
Board member Salamanca recommended Luminary Elementary as the community-preferred option. The board received a second from Member Farrant, and Chair Jacobs called the vote; the motion carried unanimously.
Laura Permenter, principal for site 130-E-SE-2, introduced the small start-up staffing team and noted the school will serve as a relief site for nearby Laureate Park Elementary while construction finishes. The board and staff discussed the color palette for the school (gray, navy and teal) during photos onstage.
The naming followed the district’s established community-engagement policy and the board’s naming procedure; no additional budget appropriation was made at the meeting. Implementation details including signage and official use of the new school name will follow standard facilities and communications processes.
