Council members agreed to secure May 18 as the date for the borough's spring street fair and discussed whether the event should break even or produce revenue for the borough.
Council members noted JC Promotions has run the street fair for years and that the company's schedule is heavily booked; staff said promotions routinely reserve Sundays. One council member said JC Promotions had paid a nominal fee to the borough in prior years and recalled figures that varied over time: "When we first started this years ago, I believe we were around 8,000 and then it dropped down to 5," and another council member said she thought last year's fee had been about $2,600. The council did not confirm a single historical number and asked staff to check the records.
Members discussed borough constraints: officials said the borough may not operate the event as a profit center but can charge vendors or otherwise recover costs so the event does not cost municipal taxpayers. Council members asked the police department and DPW to produce a line-item total for overtime and public-works support tied to previous events so the borough could approach JC Promotions with a clear cost figure.
Council members also discussed the possibility of a fall street fair in October but put that idea on hold pending budget considerations.
Why it matters: The street fair is a visible community event that requires municipal staffing and resources. Council members sought to ensure vendors or promoters cover overtime and DPW costs so the borough does not subsidize the event.
Next steps: Finance and operations staff will provide historical overtime and DPW-cost totals for prior street fairs; council will use that data when negotiating with JC Promotions.
