Brian (board chair) opened discussion on the 2025–26 school calendar and presented the memorandum of agreement with the Brentwood Teachers Association to add a flex day.
Ron (staff member) walked the board through the calendar highlights: an August flex day to reach contracted teacher days (teachers’ first contracted day on Aug. 19 and student first day Aug. 25), professional development and early-release days through the year, an aligned December 23 early release with other SAU districts, and a proposed last day of school listed as June 10. Ron described conference days, professional development days, and how the calendar aligns with SAU scheduling and the Service/School of Technology (SST) constraints.
During discussion, a board member urged consideration of starting school after Labor Day and extending June to preserve a longer summer, and staff explained that calendar changes would need discussion at the joint board and with SST because multiple sending towns must align calendars. The board clarified election-related timings: March 10 was noted as the town election and November 4 as a scheduled conference day in the calendar year under discussion.
A motion to approve the 2025–26 academic calendar carried unanimously. The chair asked that the MOA page be signed; staff said no separate motion was needed because the MOA aligns with the approved calendar and asked the board chair to sign the MOA as the second page.
The board directed staff to provide the digital color version of the calendar to members and to continue coordinating calendar timing with the SAU joint board and SST representatives when future conflicts arise.
