Board approves $2.22 million in claims, including courthouse and trail projects

The Black Hawk County Board of Supervisors on May 13 approved a resolution authorizing $2,223,259.23 in claims and payments, financing a group of capital projects across the county.
The approved resolution authorizes the county auditor to issue payments against the claims. A presenter identified as finance staff told the board, "The amount is $2,223,259.23." The board completed a roll-call vote with Supervisors Kurt Bach, Schwartz and Layland recorded as voting yes.
The finance staff listed major items in the claims package: about $560,000 to Peter's Construction for courthouse and VA remodeling projects; $232,000 to Peter's for a health department project; $197,000 to Securitas for a jail security project; about $430,000 for Cedar Valley Nature Trail construction; and $28,000 for repairs to the Port City Road Shop. The presenter also noted an amount from the sheriff's $60.40 fund of $2,870.74.
The board moved and seconded the resolution and voted by roll call. No amendments or changes to the amounts were proposed during the meeting.
The payments reflect a cluster of capital work the county is carrying out; the finance presenter said the larger-than-normal total is because of the number of capital projects currently in progress. The board did not direct additional study or hold further public hearings on the claims package; approval authorizes the auditor to issue the listed payments.
