Commissioners highlight tourism revenue, ice-sheet remodel and summer events in Weber County

Commissioner Jim Harvey used commissioner comments May 13 to outline what he described as the economic importance of tourism to Weber County and to highlight upgrades and events at county facilities.

Harvey said tourism tied to county-run facilities generates “nearly $30,000,000” in taxable income and that the county uses that revenue to offset property taxes. He noted the Weber County Ice Sheet is undergoing a remodel funded in part by symbolic legacy funding in preparation for the men’s World Cup of Curling scheduled next April, and mentioned other upcoming youth hockey and skating programs.

Harvey also promoted events at the Ogden Eccles Conference Center and the Golden Spike facilities, calling out a busy May and highlighting a November 4 open house for the conference-center remodel. He told commissioners the county has updated ticketing to a new system (eTix), completed pavement and maintenance work at event sites, and addressed water-quality and flow-meter installations at North Fork Park.

Several commissioners offered brief remarks of appreciation for county staff. No formal actions, ordinances or budget votes accompanied these comments; they were presented during the commissioner comments portion of the agenda.

The remarks provide context about county facility investments and scheduled cultural and sporting events; specific budget line items, funding amounts for individual projects, and contractual details were not read into the record during the comments period.
