District recognizes BOCES student of distinction, FFA and Interact leaders; Rotary highlights scholarships and community work

The Wappingers Central School District on May 12 honored students from Dutchess County BOCES, John Jay FFA and Interact while a Rotary Club leader described local scholarship and service programs.

Melissa Murphy, principal at Dutchess BOCES Salt Point Center, introduced Eduardo Tapia Roman as the BOCES “student of distinction,” saying, “Over the past 2 years, we have had the privilege of watching Eduardo grow not just academically, but as a person of character, leadership, and heart.” Murphy described Eduardo’s mentoring of younger students and noted he will return as a ninth grader next year.

The board also recognized Matthew Mulligan for leadership in FFA; MJ McFarland and advisors introduced Jenna Lawrence, who placed first in the Dairy Breed category for Guernseys at the New York State FFA convention and third in a digital scrapbook competition.

Todd Bowen, president of the Rotary Club of Wappingers Falls, described the club’s local activities and youth support: scholarships ($11,500 awarded last year; about $8,500 planned this year), Touch‑A‑Truck events, back‑to‑school supply drives, support for local elementary schools and the Interact Club partnership. Interact co‑presidents Maria and Taylor described 28 events this year and said the club engages elementary schools, runs fundraisers and sponsors leadership opportunities for students.

Board members and the superintendent congratulated the students and thanked community partners, noting these recognitions highlight extracurricular opportunities and community support for district students.
