The Wappingers Central School District’s district‑wide safety committee reported on May 12 that about $300,000 remains from the Smart Schools Bond Act and suggested using the funds for high-tech security upgrades.
“About have about $300,000 left. One of the few things we can use that money on is considered high-tech security upgrades for schools,” said Trustee Lokeema, chair of the district‑wide safety committee, describing possible uses such as camera and access-control systems. He clarified that non‑computerized measures such as perimeter fences are not eligible under that specific designation.
The committee also reviewed a draft 2025–26 safety plan and solicited suggestions for revisions; it plans to move the draft to a public comment period over the summer. Separately, the code of conduct committee completed a final draft review and approved it for a 30‑day public hearing in June, with the committee to incorporate public feedback and board suggestions before returning a final recommendation.
Trustee Lokeema said he had requested suggestions from committee members on how best to spend the Smart Schools funds and will share proposals with the board when available. No specific procurement actions or vendors were discussed at the meeting.
