Parks staff reported spring memorial-tree plantings and raised maintenance concerns, and provided an update on shoreland plantings and management at Ames Point led by a community group.
Staff said 25 memorial trees were planted this spring, primarily in South Park and Menominee Park, and urged relatives and donors to remove decorations placed in mulch or hung on trees that can damage plantings. Staff said they are reviewing the memorial-tree program and considering changes to the application and plaque process to reduce maintenance burdens and centralize recognition.
On shoreline plantings at Ames Point, staff said a group called Urban Ecology Oshkosh is managing the site and will present a work plan to the board in June, seeking another three-year project reinstatement. Staff described the planned technique: allow some native plants to grow so they can be identified, perform a plant rescue for desirable species, mow and remove invasives, cover bare areas with cardboard and mulch to suppress unwanted vegetation, then replant with known-sourced desirable species. The group and staff said the approach is intended to make the area more manageable and ecologically appropriate.
The board discussed whether to discourage decorations on memorial trees and staff said they will develop updated application language and policy recommendations for future board consideration. No formal action was taken.
