Nantucket Cultural Council discusses filling vacancy after member resignation

The Nantucket Cultural Council discussed how to fill a newly opened council seat after a member resigned, and members agreed to solicit potential candidates rather than make an immediate appointment.

The discussion began after the council approved its April minutes and learned that “Michael announced that he was resigning from the council, and has submitted his letter of resignation,” council staff Shanta Bliss Murphy said. Murphy told members she has at least one prospective candidate who had contacted her and that she planned to reach out to that person privately before naming them to the group.

The question of whether former member Emma Young could rejoin was raised. “She is good to join us after the end of next month,” Murphy said, referring to the council eligibility timeline. Members said they would reach out to potential candidates and encouraged anyone interested to submit the required form.

Council members emphasized continuity and experience. Member Jack Bulger said Young’s “institutional knowledge” would make her a “no brainer” to have back if she is interested; member Barbara Tibbets seconded that view. No motion to appoint anyone was made during the meeting.

Members also discussed whether to expand the number of council seats, a topic previously raised earlier in the year. Murphy said she had not received a set of names Michael had mentioned earlier and that she would follow up.

The council left the matter open and asked members to forward names or to authorize staff to contact prospects. No formal vote or appointment occurred during the meeting.

The council moved on to other agenda items after agreeing to continue outreach and to revisit the vacancy at a future meeting if needed.
