Planning commission names representative to comprehensive-plan steering committee; update due June 2026

The Planning Commission voted to appoint Commissioner Carl Munson as the commission’s representative to a community-led steering committee charged with guiding Medical Lake’s periodic comprehensive-plan update.

City staff explained the steering committee’s purpose and timing, saying the periodic update is required every 10 years under the Growth Management Act and that Medical Lake’s update is due in June 2026. Staff described a multi-stakeholder steering group including elected officials, a planning commissioner representative, parks and recreation appointee(s), city staff, school district representatives (including a student), nonprofit and business champions, and community members.

Staff said the steering committee will focus on broad values, priorities and public engagement rather than detailed technical edits: “We don't wanna bore people with comprehensive plan details. But we wanna talk about big things and ideas, and we wanna get input on those ideas.” The staff briefing said steering-committee meetings are expected at least quarterly through the update process and the committee will not have formal decision-making authority; final recommendations and regulatory actions will still come to the Planning Commission and City Council.

Commissioner Carl Munson was nominated by motion and the commission approved him as its volunteer representative. “I'll make a motion that Carl be our volunteer for the steering committee,” the motion recorded on the transcript said; the motion passed with affirmative votes.

Why it matters: The comprehensive-plan update will guide land use, capital investments and policy priorities for the next decade. A community-led steering committee aims to increase public engagement and bring varied perspectives into the plan’s framing.
