The Sandusky City Commission on May 12 approved a memorandum of understanding with Serving Our Seniors to provide a grandparents‑raising‑grandchildren respite program through the city’s recreation department.
Commissioners asked that the pilot include evaluation metrics. Mr. Worling, a city staff member, told the commission the evaluation would include counts of participating grandparents and the grandchildren served: “Yes, it would include the amount of, how many grandparents and then how many of the children, grandchildren were part of.”
Commissioners also requested daily participation breakdowns for the recreation programs. City staff said current daily attendance for the out‑of‑school programs is approximately 55 to 65 children per day, Monday through Thursday, with after‑school hours around 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and summer camp hours roughly 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. beginning the second week in June.
The ordinance authorizing the MOU passed on roll call. Staff said the MOU will take immediate effect and the program will be evaluated after the pilot period; a report will be presented to the Serving Our Seniors trustees and returned to the commission as requested.
Why it matters: the program aims to support an often‑under‑served caregiver population and will collect participation data to inform continued funding or program changes.
